How to Print QR Codes

Printing a QR code is easy. Printing one that scans reliably from the right distance is the part that matters.

Use the right file format

Use SVG when you are designing printed materials in software such as Illustrator, Canva, Figma, Inkscape, Affinity Designer, or a print shop template. Use PNG when you need a simple image for a document, quick sign, or office printer.

Match size to scanning distance

A QR code on a business card can be smaller than a QR code on a wall sign. The farther away someone scans, the larger the code needs to be. For table tents and menus, make the code comfortably visible without forcing the customer to zoom or move the phone unusually close.

Paper and surface matter

Glossy materials can create glare. Textured paper can soften the edges of the modules. Outdoor signs can fade or get dirty. If the code will be used in a high-traffic or outdoor environment, print a test and scan it in realistic conditions.

Leave space around the code

Do not crowd a QR code with text or design elements. The empty border around the code improves scan reliability and makes the call-to-action easier to understand.

Add a clear call-to-action

A QR code should tell people what will happen after they scan. Good examples include “Scan for menu,” “Scan to leave a review,” “Scan to book,” “Scan for WiFi,” or “Scan to save our contact.”

Test the final printed version

Testing the preview is not enough. Print the final artwork at real size, then scan the printed version with multiple phones. Test it from the expected distance and under realistic lighting.

Printing checklist

  • Download SVG for professional print work
  • Use PNG for simple office printing
  • Keep strong contrast
  • Leave a quiet zone
  • Add a short call-to-action
  • Test one real print before ordering many copies
  • Check that the destination page loads quickly on mobile

Best printed QR placements

Menus, receipts, stickers, product labels, window signs, appointment cards, flyers, posters, business cards, packaging inserts, event badges, and table tents are all strong QR code placements when the code is easy to see and the action is clear.
